Whitley County Historical & Genealogical Society News
January - March 2008
We’ve had an eventful three months since our last newsletter. Much of our excitement is due to a generous contribution made by Don Hammonds of Pine Knot, KY. He and his wife, Edith, have been members of our organization for several years. Many of you may know Edith for the wonderful genealogist that she was. Her death this past year saddened all those who knew her.
Don Hammonds has made a contribution of his wife’s genealogy research to our historical society. It took us by complete surprise. You cannot imagine the materials that he has donated. We are fortunate to be chosen to house the research and library of Edith Hammonds. It’s an extreme honor that we take very seriously.
Our Volunteer Staff has been hard at work indexing all the materials that were donated by Don Hammonds in his wife’s memory. Approximately half of the materials are already on our library shelves but months of work will still be required in index some of the files that contained loose papers.
HERITAGE DAY
October 13th, 2007 was our day for celebrating the heritage of all those with ties to Whitley County. The weather cooperated once again so we had a large turn out. There were over 350 people who attended the festivities. We had lots of door prizes and goody bags for those in attendance.
We’re fortunate that several of those with exhibits could fill in for others who had prior commitments. We’ve already had quite q few who requested a space for next year.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to attend our heritage festivities, we encourage you to attend the one that’s planned for the 2nd Saturday in October 2008.
